Students have keen powers of energetic observation about themselves and the world around them, but ask them to share any of those ideas in a college essay, and the silence speaks volumes. Sample essays can provide you with some great inspiration, and valuable insights into how to write a great essay. However, be careful not to get so caught up reading other peoplesâ essays that you neglect to start your own. If youâre applying to schools that request supplemental essays or do not accept the Common Application, you may have several different essays to write. And of course, it goes without saying that you should NEVER copy or imitate someone elseâs essay. If you try to make your essay sound like someone elseâs, it will end up sounding fake and awkward, and will NOT work to your advantage. Quite simply, the best college essays make a personal statement and give admissions officers a window into your soul. Many students write essays that are too clichéd or shallow, or too impersonal and uninformative. For some students, the essay itself will be cause for rejection. Evaluating a college essay, much like any piece of writing, is highly subjective. Two people might both like the same movie or song, but for totally different reasons. Deciding which colleges to apply to is difficult enough, but you add to that the stress of writing a personal essay for each of your applications. The problem is when a student seeks so many opinions from trusted adults. It's highly unlikely that any of these people have actually read college essays before â" and certainly not as a member of a college admissions committee. But a few simple tips, some introspection and insight into what admissions officers are looking for can help ease the pressure. News has compiled several college essay examples that helped students get into school. Shared by admissions staff, these essays stand out, they say, because the student voices shine, helping the school get to know them. Your personal essay is supposed to give college admissions teams a snapshot of who you are as a person and who you hope to become but you donât have to spill your guts or transcribe your whole life story. To increase your chances of getting accepted, first learn just how important your essay is and then take the time to learn the Dos and Donâts of college application essays. As a former high school teacher, I have worked with hundreds of students on their college essays. Later, as a private college essay consultant, I worked with students and parents at some top private schools before I became an admissions counselor for a small liberal arts college.
Launch College Counseling
Launch College Counseling It is an essay that makes your reader laugh or cry or think. The best college essays deal with specific examples from the writerâs life. They are not general or abstract, the more details the better. The best essays are 20% about the âtopicâ (the âwhatâ) and 80% about the writer. Great essays are memorable because they distinctively portray their subjects without relying on clichés or formulaic topics. They convey on paper a sense of who the writer is as a person. After reading a great essay, I feel as if I have just had an enlivening conversation with the person even though it was entirely on paper. A great college essay is one in which the studentâs voice and though process comes through clearly. Itâs important that your essay be a solid reflection of you as a person and as a student, and that you follow the guidelines provided in terms of topic and word-count. A great college essay is one that makes your reader want to get to know you better, to engage in a conversation with you. But sometimes students misinterpret this to mean â" âtell me about a totally unique experienceâ â" and they get totally stressed out because they donât feel that they have any unique experiences. Telling a story âonly you can tellâ means that you tell the reader a story from your perspective. After all, this component of the essay is all about your personality. Donât try to impress the admissions committee with your knowledge or verbiage; impress them with who you are. Donât write about circumstances and embellish just to have a sad or serious essay. However, if you have had to struggle with an illness, loss of a loved one or other difficult experience, discuss how you have or are working to overcome it. If you need inspiration, check out this studentâs admissions essay. It got him into Harvard, MIT, Yale, Columbia and the University of Virginia. Itâs beautifully crafted, fun and reveals more about the student than an application ever could, which is exactly the goal of the college admissions essay. If you find yourself in this situation, youâre not alone. So you donât need to have great exotic vacations or heartbreaking stories of community service in some far off land â" you just need to reveal your point of view about a topic. When you can show the reader a slice of your genuine self â" you are on your way to a great college essay. The uniqueness of an essay stems not from some external experience, but your internal responses. A great college essay combines creativity, excellent writing, and honesty. It is well-written with college bound vocabulary and style, but easy to read and somewhat unassuming. Like great works of fiction, these essays clearly paint a picture in the readerâs mind. The main character is developed with depth and detail. You need the essay to wow them with your personal qualities while sharing an engaging story, perhaps- a snapshot of your life. The tone could be funny or sad, reflective or poignant, but you NEED that reader to like you, so that they would support your application in admissions. If your essay does not reveal some sense of your best personal qualities are i.e. maturity, leadership or compassion then it has failed. A great college essay gives the reader a glimpse of the person behind the page. Lots of counselors tell students to âtell a story only you can tell,â and I definitely agree with that. It should be consistent with the rest of the application and showcase an aspect of the student not highlighted in the rest of the application. It is also well written and grammatically correct. Donât be too formal â" or too reliant on a Thesaurus. You might want to plan to do one pre-writing essay, wait a few days, and then do another pre-writing exercise. As mentioned in step 2, writing a college essay takes time, but with enough pre-planning the actual essay writing will be easier. The ultimate point of a college essay is to engage and hopefully convince the reader that you would be an asset on that campus.

10 Things To Avoid In Your Essay
10 Things To Avoid In Your Essay And when youâre finished, go back and edit it until itâs âgoodâ according to your teacherâs standards. Every once in a while, I would write a really good essay, but mostly I skated by with Bâs and A-minuses. The assigned prompts or topics may not harbor any interest for the student, making it difficult to put passion and meaning into the words when writing. A college studentâs written work will either impress or dissuade the instructor, which has an effect on future placements. Itâs harder to fool a college professor with shoddy writing. Itâs a gift, not just something that makes your life more difficult. I donât want you to make the mistake of just âgetting byâ through school, waiting desperately for summer breaks and, eventually, graduation. The thing I regret most about high school and college is that I treated it like something Ihadto do rather than something Iwantedto do. You donât have to stay in one place and write from beginning to end. Give yourself the freedom to write as if youâre circling around your topic rather than making a single, straightforward argument. As you research your essay topic, search for this story of surprise, and donât start writing until you can find it. That means that the best essays are about surprise, âYou probably think itâs one way, but in reality, you should think of it this other way.â See tip #3 for more on this. Every story is about conflict and change, and the truth is that essays are about conflict and change, too! The difference is that in an essay, the conflict is between different ideas, the change is in the way we should perceive those ideas. Yes, you need to follow the guidelines in your assignment. If your teacher tells you to write a five-paragraph essay, then write a five-paragraph essay! However, within those guidelines, find room to express something that is uniquely you. An essay on how cooking allowed the author to become more accountable or socially aware would be less common. War followed me to freshman year of high school when I wanted more than anything to start new and check off to-dos in my bullet journal. Every time news of a terror attack spread, I could hear the whispers, visualize the stares. Instead of mourning victims of horrible crimes, I felt personally responsible, only capable of focusing on my guilt. The war had manifested itself in my racing thoughts and bitten nails when I decided that I couldnât, and wouldnât, let it win. Nowadays, many students will rely on the Internet over books to find the information they need. You can search for whatever you need in a matter of seconds, and there is a immense span of information available. Then, when you edit, you can make sure everything lines up correctly. In college, I discovered a trick that helped me go from a B-average student to an A-student, but before I explain how it works, let me warn you. This technique ispowerful, but it might not work for all teachers or professors. If you wrote âchef,â for example, push yourself beyond the common value of âhealthâ and strive for unexpected values. How has cooking taught you about âaccountability,â for example, or âsocial changeâ? Weâve already read the essay on how cooking helped the author become more aware of his health. Stop trying to write a good essay (or even a âgood-enoughâ essay). Instead, write aninterestingessay, write an essay you think is fascinating. Youâll recall a Type A essay discusses a potential career aspiration, whereas a Type C essay ending may be a bit more open-ended. A description of these extracurricular activities may have sounded like a laundry-list of the authorâs accomplishments. But because sheâs naming other stickers (which connects them to the essayâs thematic thread), she basically gets to name-drop those activities while showing other parts of her life. Be sure to research your topic exhaustively and watch out for any dodgy facts. Don't miss this article in which our student advisor walks you through the 10 things you MUST NOT DO if you're looking for a good grade. All of them will lose you marks so don't let these things slip into your next essay. Use tip #4 and write five original sentences that could be turned into an essay. The truth is, education is an opportunity many people in the world donât have access to.

26 Outstanding College Essay Examples 2020
26 Outstanding College Essay Examples 2020 We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. âThese people are just confused,â Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, âLet people be who they are.â Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another personâs outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I donât necessarily have to find validity in everyoneâs viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I donât have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red.
Should I Mention My Religion In My College Essay?
Should I Mention My Religion In My College Essay? I really doubt that the 6 would impact her, but I also donât see the need to report her ACT. Thank you for drawing our attention to Stanfordâs change. Weâve updated our list to reflect that the essay is now completely optional at Stanford. I donât know of any superscoring colleges that will not superscore across SATs W/ and W/O Essay. Iâm fairly certain that Dartmouth does not require Writing. In fact, they no longer even talk of recommending it. So the good news is that you donât need to worry about your 32 or your essay. I would not recommend that your daughter retest just to improve her 8. There is a very strong chance that the UCs will have dropped the essay by next year. Given the strength of your sonâs other scores â" especially for UCSD â" I would not worry about his 7. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. Maybe you could reveal that in the last sentence of your prompt after telling about all the little things that have some relevance to your area of study. For example, you might describe many natural flora, observe fauna, then list feelings you have about nature to lead up to writing that you want to study biology. The Compass 360 provides SAT and ACT scores for some of the most competitive colleges in the country. Below are the five components of a college paragraph. They follow the order in which they are most commonly found in a paragraph; however, this is not the only possible or even successful order. As much as you wish to shine, the shine will be lost if your sentences and thoughts do not string together logically. Perhaps you can create a little mystery by not answering the prompt immediately. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. Make sure you have spelled everything correctly. If you are on a date, you would naturally want to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique, not boring. Put the reader in medias res, that is, in the middle of things. Place the reader in the middle of something happening or in the middle of a conversation. You also want to have an opinion, not step back like an unthinking geek. Write your essay as though you would be a great second date. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. Honesty, humor, talking the way you talk, showing the way you think, all help to create voice. Sometimes even a single word that stands as a paragraph can make the reader wonder and read on. The Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. We will use the highest composite score from among each test that youâve taken. There is no limit to the number of test scores you may submit to us for your application. It seems like your daughter already has a nice alternative in her SAT score. Her 1450 is concordant with her 33 ACT and doesnât come with any essay baggage.

The College Essay Timeline
The College Essay Timeline I not only want to help those who are ill and injured, but also to be entrusted with difficult decisions the occupation entails. Discovering that surgery is also a moral vocation beyond the generic application of a trained skill set encouraged me. I now understand surgeons to be much more complex practitioners of medicine, and I am certain that this is the field for me. The theme for relay for life is a hope for a cure. Through this experience as a leader, I have come to realize, as a community, we hope together, we dream together, we work together, and we succeed together. This is the phenomenon of interdependency, the interconnectedness of life, the pivotal reason for human existence. When I was thirteen and visiting Liberia, I contracted what turned out to be yellow fever. The hourglass of life incessantly trickles on and we are powerless to stop it. Every morning when I wake up, I want to be excited by the gift of a new day. I am a diehard Duke basketball fan, and I can identify all of the Duke basketball fans at my high school on one hand. Iâve gotten different Myers-Briggs personality types every time I took the test. I became a pescatarian this year to avoid fried chicken, and I can honestly get a lifeâs worth of meat out of cod, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, you name it. The theme of your essay is the thread that connects your beads. Never before had I seen anything this gruesomeâ"as even open surgery paled in comparison. Doctors in the operating room are calm, cool, and collected, making textbook incisions with machine-like, detached precision. It is a profession founded solely on skill and techniqueâ"or so I thought. This grisly experience exposed an entirely different side of this profession I hope to pursue. I met with the local doctor, but he couldnât make a diagnosis simply because he didn't have access to blood tests and because symptoms such as âMy skin feels like itâs on fireâ matched many tropical diseases. Luckily, my family managed to drive me several hours away to an urban hospital, where I was treated. I briefly ponder the traditional routes, such as taking a job or spending most of the summer at the beach. However, I know that I want to do something unique. After sticking up my magnets on the locker door, I ran my fingers across the bottom of the bag, and I realized that one remained. I know I am being idealistic and young, and that my philosophy on life is comparable to a calculus limit; I will never reach it. But I won't give up on it because, I can still get infinitely close and that is amazing. Each of the values creates an island of your personality and a paragraph for your essay. Note that I couldnât come up with something for the last one, âknowledge,â which is fine. Read her essay below, then Iâll share more about how you can find your own thematic thread. Yellow fever shouldnât be fatal, but in Africa it often is. I couldnât believe that such a solvable issue could be so severe at the timeâ"so I began to explore. This completely different perspective broadened my understanding of the surgical field and changed my initial perception of who and what a surgeon was. Share all your brainstorming content with them and ask them to mirror back to you what theyâre seeing. It can be helpful if they use using reflective language and ask lots of questions. An example of a reflective observation is âIâm hearing that âbuildingâ has been pretty important in your life⦠is that right? â Youâre hunting together for a thematic thread--something that might connect different parts of your life and self. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging.
